Children of Pharynx

‘Children of Pharynx’ is a short one-off piece in Twine created to demonstrate my abilities in dialogue, narrative, and characterization. Set in the ‘Warhammer 40,000’ universe, the project focuses on the interrogation of a convicted murderer, but not all is as it seems.

Objectives

  • Create a self contained portfolio piece in Twine

  • Demonstrate my ability to imitate the style of a well known IP

  • Demonstrate my ability to make effective documentation

  • Implement a dramatic scene that’s always moving forwards, without getting caught in ‘Bioware Hub’ style conversations where the player just clicks through every option in order.

    • 4-6 meaningful player choices, which guide the player to 1 of 4 endings.

    • Generally sticking to Jon Ingold’s ‘Accept, Reject, Deflect’ model.

      • All choices should make the player feel like a canny detective

  • Reference frequently used game mechanics, showing how this would fit into a larger RPG-like game

For those that want to see the project in a more linear fashion, the proof file can be found below. It also contains the scripts used in the Twine project.

Documentation

I made a full design document as part of this exercise, formatted the way I usually handle my professional work. Obviously, I’ll adhere to any documentation preferences a team requests, but this is how I format things, when left to my own devices. It’s presented in Google Docs because, in my personal experience, that’s where most documentation is written.
